In late January, the Social Justice Committee, HUUC, sent out a letter to Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, and Representative John Boehner concerning gun legislation. The letters focused on supporting two issues: 1) the restoration of the 1994 ban on military-style assault weapons and detachable, high-capacity ammunition magazines that could hold more than 10 rounds, and 2) closing the loopholes in our laws that allow individuals not “engaged in the business” of selling firearms to sell guns without a license—and without processing any paperwork. The text of the letter is below.
“As your constituents and people of faith, we strongly urge you to do all that you can to support legislation, policies and programs to stop the proliferation of gun violence in our nation.
Most importantly, we strongly encourage you to support proactive proposals to stop gun violence before it happens, such as:
- The restoration of the 1994 ban on military-style assault weapons and detachable, high-capacity ammunition magazines that could hold more than 10 rounds
- Closing the loopholes in our laws that allow individuals not “engaged in the business” of selling firearms to sell guns without a license—and without processing any paperwork.
Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter and we hope that you will to work to end gun violence. Our country needs to enact safe, sane and sensible gun violence prevention legislation before one more life is lost.
Sincerely,
The Social Justice Committee, Hopedale Unitarian Universalist Community”
